Storing and Archiving Safety Tests

This guidance is based on recommendations from the WA Schools Risk Management Pool.
These recommendations were designed to help you and your district manage your liability.

Give students two types of safety tests
It is highly recommended that all shop teachers give their students two kinds of tests:
    General Shop Safety Test
Because some of the safety procedures in your shop will be specific to your program and your facility you may want to create your own general shop safety test.
Equipment Skills Tests (for specific shop equipment)
These tests cover a student's safety knowledge about specific equipment in your shop. You can use the quizzes in this Web site. They have been taken from the OSPI Health and Safety Manual.

What to do with student safety tests after they have been corrected
Following Accidents or Special Incidents during the school year
If a student has been injured or a specific incident has taken place the teacher may want
to keep a copy of the related quizzes for the student(s) involved on file for a longer period of time.
Short Term Storage (during the school year)
As the classroom shop teacher it is recommended that you keep all safety quizzes that you have given to your students during the school year on file in your building.
Long Term Storage (at the end of the school year)
It is recommended that ALL safety quizzes be archived or kept on until students reach age 21. Because of space limitations some school districts choose to store copies of these quizzes on microfiche.
